I had a laptop cooler that I've been using most of the last few years. It did what I needed it to do and I'd still be using except for the fact that the fans started rattling too much and got so annoying that I just couldn't use the fans at all. Seeing this particular cooling pad come available, I took a chance that it would be one that I could use for the laptop that I'm stuck using. It will work but then again there are a few issues that make it less than optimal for me. Some that I can address with a smaller unit, some that I can't.
Lets start with the always on light around this cooling pad. I may have missed hitting the right setting to turn off the light, but in cycling through various options (which weren't covered in any of the quick reference type information that was provided), I couldn't find an option to turn off the light. Ooops, let me correct that now – there is such an option, just took a bit more thought to figure it out, hold the light button for a few seconds and it will finally turn off the light. Yay.
Next, this cooling pad is a bit louder than I had hoped for. Not super loud, but loud enough to hear in the background as it sits on my desk and runs. Blah. I was hoping for as quiet as possible. Not quite on that front. Even adjusting the speed (done with the small roller on the front of the pad, not far from the speed indicator) doesn't result in the quiet level that I would like to hear. Going to a slower speed brings the noise down some but not really to the point of what would be called quiet.
Beyond that, there's the "foam" that rims the area where the laptop will sit. Because of the size difference between the laptop I have (15", give or take) and the size that this cooling pad is meant to support (seemingly more towards the 17" screen size), there's extra padding and extra desktop space taken up on my desk. The laptop wants to sink into the padding which is annoying due to connections that I need to make on the laptop. The foam isn't that dense so it allows the laptop to sink down and thus the ports on the laptop are being blocked more than they should be. If the foam was more dense, it would help keep that from happening. Similarly, if this cooling pad was smaller it would fit better for sure.
Would I buy another one of these pads? Probably yes. Would I recommend it for others that are looking for a cooling pad? Yes, assuming they have a laptop that is bigger and more suitable for this size pad.
